Saying Thank You – Instagram Strategy for Responding to Comments

We all know that the point of “social media” is to be, um…social, right?  And Instagram is by far the winning platform when it comes to engagement.

A key aspect of engagement is responding to comments on your posts.

But are there any tricks to this?  Any time-saving hacks?  Any strategies to keep in mind?  But of course.

  1. Post 1-2 new pictures FIRST.  Why?

When you @mention someone to respond to their comment, they’ll get a notification.  Here’s what I started noticing about myself…Whenever I got a notification from someone thanking me for a comment, I naturally went back to their page to see if they posted anything new.  And, more often than not, I then liked and commented on those new posts too!  So, first things first, be sure to post 1-2 new pictures before responding back to comments on existing posts, so that your engagement will be higher overall.  And engagement is the name of the game when it comes to the IG algorithm.

  2. Scan the comments for questions or very specific comments, and answer those in a personalized way.

You will definitely want to answer specific questions, that’s a no-brainer.  Also, some of your comments may require a more personalized response, rather than “thank you!”  What if someone comments, “Oh, this picture reminds me of my sweet doggie that we had growing up.  This makes me miss him today :(”  Yeah – don’t comment back, “thank you!” but rather, “Oh, I’m sorry this picture makes you miss him but hopefully you have many happy memories.  I know we’ll miss our fur-baby if we ever have to live without him…”  Ya feel me?

  3. Do you reply to emoji-only comments?  Up to you.  With this next hack, you most certainly could…But it’s not necessary.  Do you reply to spam?  Up to you, but probably not.

  4.  To reply to multiple comments at once, with a simple “Thank you” or “Thank you for your kind comments,” etc..

Use the Hard Press (demo’d in the video – it’s a PRESS not a tap!) to copy/paste usernames.

You can paste up to 10 @mentions in each comment box!

I have admit, this is one of the coolest hacks I’ve learned in awhile.  It’s sure to save you SO much time replying to comments!  Stay with me and watch the video below to see this in action!

Use Text Replacement shortcuts to reply to comments, especially multiple comments.

On an iphone, you can save shortcuts, so for example, I can save the phrase, “Thank you so much for your kind words” to a shortcut, so that when I type “ty1” the entire phrase will populate (once I hit the space bar.) This is so super cool, y’all.

Here are the instructions!  Or just watch the video tutorial.

How to Create Shortcuts for Common Phrases

to Help you Save Time

Tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
Click the + icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
Enter the phrase you want to save, such as, “Thank you so much for your kind comments.”
Enter a shortcut that will be easy for you to remember, such as “ty1”.  (The reason I say “ty1” with the 1 after it is because I already have a phrase for “ty” which is Thank you.  I use it for texting mostly.)
Once you’re in Instagram and you’ll got all your @mentions (up to 10 in a single comment) go ahead and type “ty1) and you’re all set!

5.  Use Dictation/Talk to Text/Voice Command/the microphone on your keyboard to speak longer comments into your phone that will appear in the comment box, instead of typing it all out.

This is also demo’d in the video.
