Mod Spotlight | An Interview with Rebecca Malouf Franson

Hi! I’m Amanda, the creator of HubHack, a service that provides momtogs with all the hub themes and hashtags every day.  (More about me here…)

Don’t miss the bottom of this post  – I’ve added an awesome freebie for you!

I am so excited to share this interview with y’all today, I had such a fun time chatting with Rebecca, the creator of @Camera_Mama and also a talented photographer in her own right.  She photographs weddings and portraits and you can find her work on Instagram over at @MerrakaiPhotography.

Below the video, I’ve provided you a little breakdown of our interview – we went a bit longer than I expected, but I hope you enjoy it!

1:16 Introduction – A little about Rebecca

Merrakai Photography’s Website: Boise, ID Portrait & Wedding Photographer

Even though she does portraits and weddings, her true love is family photography.

1:50 Where does the name Merrakai come from?

Found in an old Latin book that belonged to her Grandmother, “Meraki,” is originally Turkish, meaning “The essence of yourself and the love and passion you put into your work.”

Greek Translation: “Doing things with love, passion and a lot of soul.” (ref)

Modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love — when you put “something of yourself” into what you’re doing, whatever it may be. Meraki is often used to describe cooking or preparing a meal, but it can also mean arranging a room, choosing decorations, or setting an elegant table. (ref)

Don’t you guys seriously LOVE THAT???  I’m totally gonna add Meraki to my everyday lingo.

4:25 Are you related to a famous Beverly Hills REAL HOUSEWIFE?

Keeping this one a secret, y’all, you’ll have to watch!

Her brother’s beautiful and sophisticated bedding products business, Malouf Sleep.

6:49 How did the idea for @Camera_Mama come about?

On a whim, she created the hub after a friend came over to learn some photography tips from her.  It’s a way for her to share what she knows, but also to be able to learn from other people.  And it comes in bite-sized pieces – for us busy moms, taking a photography course is a huge commitment, but on Instagram, we can learn tips and tricks in small doses.

The Hub also gives her the inspiration to pick up the camera and photograph her own children.

11:00 Rebecca talks about the Camera Mama website

www.cammama.com which posts weekly Theme Announcements on Sunday night; Tip of the Week from the featured photos, and Theme Round-up of favorite pictures from the weekly theme.  There’s also Photographer Features AND put the Camera Mama coffee mug on your Christmas list! There are other fun items, like t-shirts, key chains, etc that would make a fun gift for you or your CameraMama friends.

18:00 What do you look for, as a mod, when you’re looking for pictures to feature?

Something that catches her eye, a photo where she wonders, “How did they do that?” and inspiration for photographing older kids.  She enjoys featuring smaller accounts to help people find new, talented photographers.
